To commemorate the fifty years of the Graduate School of Business, the university’s renovation and expansion project enlivens its program with vibrant spaces for teaching, quiet study, interaction, and large events.
The designers identified areas of collaboration and study as “luminous destinations”, with lighting effects to catch the eye. Integrated lighting details meticulously concealed within wall slots and coves highlight the curving architectural features, ensuring that these destinations beckon occupants with a warm, inviting glow. These spaces are connected by a warm wood ceiling that expands between the spaces and unifies them. Neutral downlights are utilized as an efficient, cost effective source of light, allowing the destinations (rather than the moments of transition) to become the focal point within the connection zones.

University attendees experience a diverse array of lighting environments. Whether studying in the lounge under the tall, curving atrium (marked by a subtle cove and columns kissed with light), or completing a quick assignment within the glare-free comfort of the meeting rooms, students will find each space to be thoughtfully illuminated. Classrooms feature layers of lighting, including wall washers and pendants, which adapt to different modes of study. Intuitive lighting control scenes allow the faculty to adjust the classroom lighting for varying presentation styles and focal points.

The grand multipurpose hall is a destination for large gatherings, and hosts events ranging from seminar talks to formal dinners. Concealed sources of light create glowing architectural surfaces that break through the expansive glazing and invite students from across campus into these flexible interiors.

The design includes aggressive lighting power density reductions and controls supporting LEED Gold certification, while carefully crafting a luminous environment that fosters a sense of community, comfort, and engagement among its occupants.
