An innovative complex for 740 students and the surrounding community, the Martin Luther King, Jr. School leverages sustainable design to enhance educational outcomes and community resilience. Each school program, including preschool, lower school, upper school, and community school programs. has its own distinct place, identity, and access to meet the specific developmental needs of these diverse students. All of these programs are unified by King Street, an internal public area that provides access to the shared areas including a library/learning commons, cafeteria, gymnasiums, and auditorium. King Street also allows for convenient and safe community use of the building after hours. According to extensive Pre- and Post-Occupancy Evaluations, the building set a new benchmark for well day lit classrooms which—combined with other conservation and healthy building systems—resulted in the building being honored as the second highest-scoring LEED for Schools project in the world.
