In redesigning L.L.Bean’s retail store prototype, the Lam team crafted a lighting scheme that utilizes the principle of positive focus—lighting the walls and merchandise, allowing the ambient light levels to drop off. To achieve this, the perimeter is wrapped in linear fluorescent fixtures, while ‘high-bay’ pendants fill in ambient lighting throughout the floor area where needed, and low-wattage metal halide track heads light the merchandise. The resulting lighting scheme was very energy-efficient at the time of construction. In the dressing rooms, custom-designed fixtures employ L.L.Bean’s signature wrapping paper motif. Register areas take advantage of the unfinished ceiling aesthetic, hiding light in between joists.
