The recent renovation of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD, enhances the worship space by layering effects that highlight architectural elements, create depth, and provide essential accent and reading lighting. To accommodate the double-height space, top-access recessed fixtures and winched decorative lanterns were carefully coordinated. The design newly celebrates the volume of the space by emphasizing the interaction between the ornamented ceiling and walls, using concealed and discreet lighting sources to reveal form, texture, and human presence. Three distinct lighting gestures define the space: indirect accent lighting from concealed uplights highlights the perimeter cornice and ceiling; direct illumination from recessed adjustable lights provides wall washing, reading light, and key spotlighting for focal points such as the lectern, table, and musicians; and decorative pendant lanterns introduce scale and visual warmth.
A newly conceived Palladian window replaces the original arched stained-glass window, designed with careful tinting to filter harsh sunlight while maintaining comfort and aesthetic appeal throughout the day. Digital and physical modeling informed its design, ensuring optimal daylight control. Additionally, a sophisticated dimming control system conserves energy and allows for pre-set scenes tailored to different times of the day and special events. The result is an inviting, visually rich, and spiritually uplifting worship environment that fosters comfort and connection, providing the community with an inspiring space for reflection and transformation.
