Lam DC Wins 2024 IES DC Candela Awards
Our DC Office recently collected three section awards and one honorable mention at the 2024 IESDC Candela Awards! The projects, completed by STROIK Lighting Design prior to joining Lam Partners, are featured below:
Catholic University of America Garvey Hall
Section Award of Merits, Interior Lighting and Outdoor Lighting
Situated at the heart of the Catholic University of America campus, Garvey Hall presents as an imposing Tudor Gothic edifice, while also expressing a warm welcome. The nighttime ambiance echoes the architecture with a “lantern” approach, in which architectural apertures and three-dimensional volumes exude warmth and intimacy.
Department of General Services (DGS) Headquarters
Section Award of Merit, Interior Lighting
The city’s new 258,000-square-foot real estate department headquarters boasts four office levels, ground-floor retail, a penthouse, rooftop terrace, and below-grade parking. Celebrating neighborhoods, culture, arts, and geography, thematic visual elements are expressed through 2D art and graphic design – all uniformly illuminated. Lighting grids and patterns reflect these themes in the ceiling as well.
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Honorable Mention Section Award
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace sought an interior renovation of its 1989 building, located on Washington DC’s historic Embassy Row. Enhanced by light, the whitewashed environment is now engaging, inviting, and peaceful. The transformation of the space began with an important architectural intervention – removing a part of the 2nd floor to transform the lobby into a 2-story volume, in which a new, stretched membrane ceiling is backed with a dynamic white LED matrix, offering a luminous, tunable white “sky” space.
Congrats to Chris Stroik and Harry Raab in our DC office and to everyone on the project teams on these achievements.
