Lam Wins 2024 LIT Design Awards

We were honored to receive one winning entry and three honorable mentions in the 2024 LIT Design Awards:

Winner, Outdoor Light Art Installation
The Orb is a new pavilion designed by Marc Fornes of The Very Many, which serves as an architectural centerpiece at Google’s Charleston East Campus in Mountain View, California. Standing 10 meters tall, this ultra-thin, self-supported aluminum shell structure features intricate folds and tiny perforations that create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
The lighting design for The Orb aims to enhance itsorganic and twisting shapes, emphasizing its visual and structural complexity. Utilizing both natural and artificial lighting, the design integrates seamlessly with the pavilion’s perforated surfaces to produce a captivating effect of light and shadow. During the day, sunlight filters through the perforations, casting intricate patterns on the ground and the inner surfaces. At night, strategically placed LED lights highlight the structure’s contours, transforming The Orb into a luminous landmark.

Honorable Mention, Architectural Lighting Design
“The Pru”, fondly referred to by Bostonians, has been the pinnacle anchor for the city for generations. Through its lights, it has spoken to the city in many ways. The glowing crown has celebrated wins, stood in solidarity, and supported causes. The redesign keeps this relationship intact while maintaining the sanctity of the original facade and architecture.

Honorable Mention – Architectural Lighting Design
The lighting design of the Davis Center reinforces its mission of social justice, inclusion, and community engagement, creating an environment that is both welcoming and meaningful. Lighting elements work in harmony with the architecture to shape the user experience and support the building’s environmental goals. Approaching the building at night, a color-changing soffit contrasts with natural materials to project a welcoming beacon to the campus community. At ground level, the lobby and multipurpose rooms balance daylight with a concealed slot, also offering color-changing lighting to enhance the visual experience.

Honorable Mention – Architectural Lighting Design
The recent renovation of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD, embraced the challenge of revitalizing a beloved historic landmark while integrating modern functionality. The lighting design played a pivotal role in this transformation, emphasizing the sacred atmosphere, architectural beauty, and enhanced usability of the space.

Virginia Theological Seminary Welcome Center
Honorable Mention – Architectural Lighting Design
The circa-1920 neo-classical Welcome Center provides a grand room that reflects the Seminary’s history and mission, while engaging visitors to reflect on the distinctive values of the school. This renovation repositioned the Center as a more inviting and fresher interior space with informational displays, and also transformed its lower level into exhibition space.
Congrats to all of our designers on these wonderful achievements!
