Light Up Boston
In its 5th year, “Light Up Boston” brings Brighter Boston interns to a Boston landmark to reimagine its architectural lighting through the lens of our youth. In collaboration with Available Light and Retonica, Lam Partners/Lam Labs shares with the interns the beauty of lighting design within an architectural setting. This annual event is part of Brighter Boston’s career pathways program to open the doors for these teens/20-somethings to explore architectural lighting design as a potential career path.
While Brighter Boston interns are typically training within a theater setting, we took to the streets to figuratively and literally “jump into architectural lighting”. Teams of interns and practicing architectural lighting designers were tasked to choose an area to illuminate, create a lighting concept, test drive/tinker/edit, and then present their lighting schemes to their fellow peers all within the span of two hours. This “guerilla lighting” event is a cherished highlight on Brighter Boston’s “Awesome Stuff” calendar of events.
This fall, the interns had the backdrop of The First Church and plaza for “Light Up Boston”. As teams were exploring lighting ideas, lighting buzz words – layers of light, wayfinding, directionality, contrast – resonated through their designs. This new class of interns were so creative in their lighting designs and selections of spaces to reimagine lighting within their built environment. We also had the wonderful opportunity to sneak a peak inside the incredible Mapparium space within The First Church at Christian Science Center.
Lam Labs is dedicated to the continuing passion for architectural lighting design through research and community engagement. Specifically within the Lam Labs Community branch, we are eager and excited to find opportunities to connect our architectural practice with sparking joy in youth. We are thankful for collaborating once again with Brighter Boston on this “AwesomeStuff” event that is an annual staple to their intern line up.
