Codiak, an emerging life science company, quickly outgrew its previous space and sought to expand its office and lab areas. With an architectural concept based on the aurora borealis, a slowly shifting, color-changing cove connects the varying workspaces via this unifying visual thread. In the open office spaces, low brightness linear downlights illuminate task surfaces discreetly, to avoid competing in the visual hierarchy with the feature cove element. In the pantry and adjacent multipurpose spaces, hexagonal, lensed pendants complement the similarly shaped acoustic baffles to create a seamless visual at the ceiling plane. The labs require greater visual acuity, so energy efficiency was combined with a comfortable and balanced composition of light. In the labs, lensed linear direct / indirect pendants are centered between the benches to provide both ambient and task light. A regressed lensed perimeter wallwasher provides functional light at the core wall, enhancing the sense of visual symmetry with the abundant, south-facing exterior glazing.
